“Dread Scott: A man was lynched by police yesterday” (w.t.) (2020)

July 6th 2020: Lake Harmony, PA. Took it with me outside to the “beach.” Sat by the water (heat, hot) squinted; could hear two men talking but could not hear hem, was scared to go to the water and to unfurl without others present. Sunlight slanting; squinting; occasional breeze, but hot. Squelching into the dirt. Went into the water, the two of the present like parents. When I came out and the heat dimmed a bit I put the flag around my shoulders ( did not bring a towel). The letters folded; illegible. No one around to read it.

Moved to the beach section. Peed in the bushes with it still draped around me. After  family — two familes came out? One a white woman with an ankle tattoo, on the larger side, two small kids, waded into their ankles into the water (on the porch now grasses waving in the tide or I guess swept by the tide or I guess waving by the waves or I guess waved by the waves) then the boy said something and she said “Oh, you have to go potty?” No masks. She said hi to the two of us or maybe just to the others (I guess not one family actually), and I said hi back. Then they left. Later I went to get my things from the picnic table and the two stared at me as I approached and I said hi and they said nothing back and they didn’t wear masks and I took my things and left. Then I draped it over my chair in my room, not sure if my father noticed.
